Private Cardiac MRI in London

A cardiac MRI gives the most detailed picture of the heart muscle, valves and scarring available today, without any radiation. Dr Gosia Wamil offers private cardiac MRI for patients in London at Mayo Clinic Healthcare on Portland Place, and reviews every scan personally.

What a cardiac MRI shows

Cardiac MRI shows the structure and function of the heart in three dimensions: how strongly the muscle pumps, how the valves work, whether there is inflammation, and whether there is scarring (late gadolinium enhancement). It also measures heart muscle thickness and can detect iron overload and pericardial disease. Because it characterises tissue rather than just shape, it often answers questions that an echocardiogram or CT cannot.

Who cardiac MRI is for

It is particularly useful for investigating cardiomyopathy and inherited heart muscle disease, myocarditis, unexplained heart failure, chest pain with unclear coronary disease, and heart rhythm problems where structural disease is suspected. It is also used for family screening when a relative has a known cardiomyopathy, and to monitor the heart during or after certain cancer treatments.

What happens on the day

You will be asked about metal implants, surgery and allergies before the scan. You change into a gown, lie on the scanner table with ECG leads attached, and are asked to hold your breath for short periods. The scan usually takes 45 to 60 minutes, and many studies include a gadolinium contrast injection. Please allow about 90 minutes for the whole visit.

Results and next steps

Dr Wamil reviews the images herself and discusses the findings with you, including how they compare with any previous scans. You leave with a clear explanation of what was found, a written report for your GP or referring specialist, and a plan for treatment or further investigation where it is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for a private cardiac MRI in London?

Not necessarily. Many patients book directly, particularly for a second opinion. If you have recent tests, reports or scan images, bring them with you as Dr Wamil can often review the original images rather than relying on the written report alone.

Is a cardiac MRI safe?

Cardiac MRI does not use ionising radiation. The main consideration is metal in the body. Most modern pacemakers and defibrillators are safe for MRI, but the clinic will check your device and implants before booking. Tell the team if you are or may be pregnant, or have kidney problems.

How long does a cardiac MRI take?

The scan itself typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. With preparation, contrast and time to settle, allow around 90 minutes at the clinic.

Will I need a contrast injection?

In many studies a gadolinium-based contrast agent is used to assess blood flow and scarring. Kidney function is checked beforehand where needed, and any allergy history is reviewed before the appointment.

Is cardiac MRI covered by medical insurance?

Dr Wamil is recognised by the major UK medical insurers and also sees self-pay patients. Please contact the clinic before your appointment to confirm your cover or discuss self-pay costs.
