A heart check-up is for people who feel well but want to know where their heart health stands. Dr Gosia Wamil offers private cardiac screening in London at Mayo Clinic Healthcare, combining a full consultation with the tests that actually change decisions.
Screening is most valuable if you have a family history of early heart disease or inherited heart muscle disease, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes, or a history of smoking. It is also worthwhile if you have noticed breathlessness or reduced exercise capacity that you cannot explain, or if you are entering perimenopause and want your cardiovascular risk reviewed properly.
A resting ECG and echocardiogram detect rhythm problems, heart muscle disease, valve disease and previous silent heart attacks. Blood pressure and cholesterol results inform your long-term risk. No screening programme can rule out every future event, so if your assessment suggests a higher risk, Dr Wamil will discuss whether further tests such as a CT coronary angiogram or cardiac MRI are appropriate.
You will not simply be handed a printout. Dr Wamil goes through each result with you, explains what it means in the context of your history and family background, and sets out what — if anything — needs to change. Where nothing is wrong, that is stated plainly, which is often the most useful outcome of all.
Heart disease is still frequently attributed to something else in women, and symptoms during perimenopause are especially easy to dismiss. Dr Wamil has a specific interest in heart disease in women and offers screening tailored to that context, including review of blood pressure changes, palpitations and breathlessness around the menopause.
Most assessments take around 90 minutes, covering the consultation, ECG, echocardiogram and blood tests, with results discussed during the visit where possible.
No. Many patients book precisely because they have no symptoms and want reassurance or a baseline. Others book because of family history or a risk factor such as high blood pressure.
For most people with no findings, repeating a full assessment every few years is reasonable. If risk factors or early changes are found, Dr Wamil will recommend a more specific interval.
A resting ECG and echocardiogram suggest but do not directly image the coronary arteries. If your risk profile or symptoms warrant it, Dr Wamil will arrange CT coronary angiography or another appropriate test.
Cover varies between insurers and policies, particularly for screening in people without symptoms. Dr Wamil is recognised by the major UK insurers and also sees self-pay patients — please confirm with the clinic before booking.
