Heart Symptom

Shortness of Breath

Breathlessness — feeling unable to get enough air — can be a sign of heart disease, particularly heart failure or valve problems. It may occur on exertion, when lying flat, or at rest.

Call 999 if breathlessness is sudden, severe, or comes with chest pain, swelling of the legs, or a fluttering heartbeat. Otherwise, book an assessment if it is new, worsening, or limiting your daily activities.

Cardiac causes include heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart valve disease and arrhythmias. Lung causes include asthma and COPD. A cardiology review helps identify the heart's role.

How is shortness of breath assessed?

Tests may include an echocardiogram, ECG, blood tests (including BNP), and sometimes cardiac MRI or CT to assess heart function and structure.
