Heart Symptom

Palpitations

Palpitations are the sensation of a racing, pounding, fluttering or irregular heartbeat. They are very common and often harmless, but they can sometimes signal an underlying heart rhythm problem that needs treatment.

Call 999 if palpitations come with chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness or breathlessness. Otherwise, book a cardiology assessment if they are frequent, last a long time, or worry you.

What causes palpitations?

Common triggers include stress, caffeine, alcohol and anxiety. Cardiac causes include atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ectopic beats and other arrhythmias.

How are palpitations assessed?

Assessment may include an ECG, a heart monitor (Holter or wearable monitor) worn for several days, echocardiogram and blood tests to capture the rhythm when symptoms occur.

Treatment

Treatment ranges from reassurance and lifestyle changes to medication, catheter ablation or a pacemaker, depending on the rhythm problem identified.
