Heart Symptom

Dizziness & Fainting

Dizziness, light-headedness and fainting (syncope) can result from a drop in blood pressure, an abnormal heart rhythm, or other cardiac conditions. They should be assessed when they are recurrent or unexplained.

Call 999 if fainting occurs with chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, or during exercise. Otherwise, book an assessment if episodes are frequent, sudden, or lead to injury.

What causes dizziness and fainting?

Cardiac causes include slow or fast heart rhythms, low blood pressure, structural heart disease and arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. Non-cardiac causes include dehydration and inner-ear problems.

How is it assessed?

Assessment may include an ECG, heart monitoring, echocardiogram, and tilt-table testing to reproduce symptoms and identify the cause.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include medication, a pacemaker, or catheter ablation for rhythm problems.
